Enchanting

Enchanting is the art of using magic to improve items - turning wood into magic wands or increasing the bonuses of a piece of equipment. Enchanting requires raw materials, most of which come from disenchanting quality items (at least uncommon). This art thus requires no special gathering skill.

Initially, enchanters may gain skill through disenchanting. The most efficient strategy is to progress just by disenchanting and bank the reagents. Once disenchanting no longer grants additional skill, you can then start to enchant. In general, when enchanting just for skill ups, you should focus on enchants which are yellow or orange which use the minimum number of reagents. Dusts are usually easier to get than essences, so use those first. While skilling up, you can either offer the enchants for free (tips always welcome) or keep a set of bracers or boots in your bank as default targets. You will frequently see enchanters offering free enchants if the client provides his/her own materials.

The enchanter's tools of the trade are enchanting rods. The more powerful the spell, the better the enchanting rod needed. The enchanter makes his/her runed rods using metal rods crafted by blacksmiths (copper, silver, gold, truesilver, arcanite, fel iron, adamantite, and eternium). Each higher level rod can be used in the place of any lower level rod, so you need only keep your newest rod handy. The rod must be in your pack to enchant, but does not need to be equipped. Rods can be stored in Enchanting Bags along with reagents.

Enchanting is not a huge money-making trade until the higher-level enchants, some of which can earn 5-10g even if the client provides the materials. At the lower levels, "glowy" enchants are the most tradable ones. The first such is "Enchant Weapon - Minor Beastslayer", requiring 90 Enchanting. This is (occasionally) dropped by a variety of ~L20 mobs (some guildmembers report Redridge Murlocs as a good source). The general rule is that a weapon enchant must be at least +3 to have a glow effect.

Blood elves have a racial affinity for enchanting and have a bonus of +10 to skill. This allows them to reach L235 as an Expert and L310 as an Artisan.

Disenchanting

Disenchanting items yields reagents based on the item level. In general, the item level is the minimum level to use the item plus 5 (true for most Azerothian items, at least). The following table provides general guidelines for the various reagents. Items at the high end of the level band typically produce more than one of the same reagent when disenchanted. In general, Uncommon (green) items are likeliest to disenchant into dusts then essences, with a slim chance of producing a shard. Rare (blue) items always disenchant into shards, with a slim chance of a Nexus Crystal at high levels. Epic (purple) items may disenchant into shards or Nexus Crystals or Void Crystals at high levels. Your enchanting skill determines the item level you may disenchant. Two very useful related addons are Fizzwidget's Disenchant Predictor and Norganna's Enchantrix.
