Fishing, besides being a relaxing break, is primarily a gathering skill. Alchemists need Oily Blackmouth, Firefin Snappers, and Stonescale Eels to make oils required by higher level potions. And cooks can turn the day's catch into tasty (and, in some cases, stat-boosting) meals. Fishing provides the quickest way to level up cooking skill - and the combination is extremely useful to Hunters with pets who can eat fish. The Deviate Fish caught in the oases of the Barrens are used to make Savory Deviate Delight and Elixirs of Giant Growth. And occasionally, a fishing line will snag on an item or a chest.

You must be at least L5 to train Apprentice Fishing, L10 for Journeyman and higher. After training in fishing, you will have a "Fishing" icon in the General tab of your spellbook. Drag it to a handy location in your action bar. To fish, you must equip a Fishing Pole. Fishing vendors are found near all the starting trainers, and they will be happy to sell you one. Click the Fishing icon to cast your line. You should see a Fishing Bobber appear in the water. If you get the error "Your cast did not land in fishable water", try to adjust your position and cast again. The bobber will bounce in the water with a splash when you've hooked something. Right-click on the bobber to reel in your catch (autolooting with a shift-right-click will deposit the catch directly into your bags). Fishing Buddy is a useful addon for the avid fisherman.

If your fish gets away or all you catch is junk, you may need to raise your skill level to fish effectively. The easiest way to do this quickly is to use lures, also sold by fishing vendors. To use a lure, right-click on the lure and then click on your fishing pole (if you have the pole equipped, open your character window and click on the pole in the weapon slot).

The Big Iron Fishing Pole is a rare drop from the lobster traps off the shore of Shadowprey Village in western Desolace. The traps are ground spawns underwater and will contain either shellfish (for a Horde quest), an item (usually vendor trash, but occasionally a higher quality item), an irritated L34-35 Makura, or the Big Iron Fishing Pole. Horde characters have the opportunity to get Nat Pagle's Extreme Angler FC-5000 fishing pole (+25 Fishing and 38.8 DPS) from a quest from the Revantusk Trolls in the Hinterlands.

	This quest requires 225 Fishing and a minimum L35. When fishing, it is important to make sure that the zone name (displayed above the minimap) matches what the quest is asking for. For instance, Blue Sailfin are found on the "Savage Coast", not "Southern Savage Coast" or other variants. Each fish is a rare drop and typically takes about 10 minutes (sometimes on the first cast, sometimes a lot longer. A typical approach is: set your hearthstone in Theramore and go get the quest (Nat's island is west of the Theramore docks - if you have the quest from IF, he'll show up as a yellow dot on your minimap - he's near (58.6, 60.0) on the small island at the southwest end of the bay in Tidefury Cove). Griff to Nigel's Point in Desolace. Run west (dodging the nasty thunder lizards) until you get to the coast near Ethel Rendor. Head south (avoiding naga) until the minimap reads "Sar'theris Strand". Fish. If you want the Big Iron Fishing Pole, continue south along the coast to Shadowprey Village. Open the lobster traps found underwater near the village which will contain shellfish, items, an angry makura, or (rarely) the Big Iron Fishing Pole. Run down to Feralas (or return to Nigel's Point and griff to Feathermoon if you have it). Continue along the Feralas road until you cross the bridge over the Verdantis River (near Dire Maul). Move off along the bank and fish. Hearthstone back to Theramore and catch the boat back to Menethil. From Menethil, griff to Ironforge and tram or griff to Stormwind. To get to the Swamp of Sorrows, griff to Darkshire and run east (or, if you've already been there, griff to Nethergarde and go north). Misty Reed Strand is the far east end of the Swamp; it seems easier to run along the southern end, watching for spiders and Horde. Fish. Run to Nethergarde and griff to Darkshire. Run west along the road until you reach the small guard camp, then turn south to Stranglethorn Vale. Follow the road south until you pass the Ziaja'tai ruins. Run west to the coast. "The Savage Coast" starts at the river mouth just south of Grom'gol; south of that point, it's "Southern Savage Coast" and you won't catch the fish you need. Fish. Hearth back to Theramore and turn in the quest.

Daily Quests
A random daily fishing quest is given out by Old Man Barlo who can be found fishing on the shore of Silmyr Lake just northeast of Shattrath City. The reward is a Bag of Fishing Treasures which contain random items, including money and items - this is the source of the recipe for Captain Rumsey's Lager (100 Cooking, +10 fishing skill for 3 min) and the baby crocolisk pets.

Another set of five daily quests is given out by Marcia Chase at the Dalaran fountain.
[80] The Ghostfish	Fish up a Phantom Ghostfish at River's Heart in Sholazar Basin and eat it. You can catch this in place of any Pygmy Suckerfish - probably more likely out of a school, but you can catch them anywhere in River's Heart. You have 60 seconds to eat it upon catching it.

[80] Monsterbelly Appetite	Fish up a Severed Arm and return it to Olisarra the Kind in Dalaran City (Olisarra is the First Aid trainer found in the Magus Commerce Exchange. Deepsea Monsterbellies are found in offshore ocean areas - one good one is the Frozen Sea south of the Path of the Titans in Dragonblight, just a quick swim or flight from Mo'aki Harbor. A Bloated Monsterbelly will contain the quest item.

The Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza

Every Sunday from 2-4 pm server time, eager fisherfolk from around Azeroth gather along the shores of Stranglethorn Vale to compete for prizes, silver, and bragging rights. During this time, schools of Tastyfish (which look similar to other schools of fish) spawn along the coasts of the Vale - everywhere but within the confines of Booty Bay. This includes the nearer islands (excluding Jaguero Island). Fishing with your bobber in the schools yields Tastyfish, the occasional item, or a rare fish. The first contestant to catch 40 Tastyfish and turn them in to Fishmaster Riggle Bassbait at Booty Bay wins their choice of the Arcanite Fishing Pole (+35 Fishing, 17.5 DPS, req. 300 Fishing) or the Hook of the Master Angler (Trinket, Use: Turns you into a fish giving water breath and increasing your movement speed, but attacking or casting while in this form breaks the effect. Does not work out of water or at the water's surface). Both prizes are BoP. You may win the contest multiple times (although it's considered impolite to win more than twice, since you can't use multiples of the items). In practice, the winner is usually declared within about 30 minutes. If you don't win, you can still turn in your Tastyfish for 23s per 5 fish. If you're serious about competing, make sure you set your Hearthstone to Booty Bay first, since the turn in is just outside the inn. Many times, the contest has been decided by a race for the Fishmaster's attention.
