Reputation Compendium

Overview

In the World of Warcraft, Reputation is the mark of how respected you are by a particular political or social group (a "faction"). Reputation ranges from Hated (considered Kill On Sight by members of that faction) through Exalted (extremely highly regarded). To move from one level to the next requires a certain number of reputation points for the faction.

Reputation Point Range Effect
Hated -42,000 to -6,000 Kill On Sight, permanently At War
Hostile -6,000 to -3,000 Kill On Sight
Unfriendly -3,000 to 0 No interaction, but no longer Kill On Sight
Neutral 0 to 3,000 Some interaction possible, default starting level with NPCs
Also starting level (500/3000) between Undercity and the rest of the Horde
Friendly 3,000 to 9,000 Gain 5% discount from vendors of the faction, full interaction possible, default starting level with your team
Honored 9,000 to 21,000 Gain 10% discount from vendors of the faction
Revered 21,000 to 42,000 Gain 15% discount from vendors of the faction
Exalted 42,000+ Gain 20% discount from vendors of the faction and have access to mounts of that faction (if applicable)

The Reputation tab on your character panel will show you the amount of reputation you have accumulated for each faction in your current level and the amount required to advance. A chat message may be displayed when you gain reputation; by default, this message appears in your combat window and is blue. The default UI displays only the primary reputation gain or loss, it does not display reputation "rippling" (also called "spillover").

Reputation rippling is the effect that gaining reputation has on other members of the same team. For instance, completing a quest may give a primary faction gain for Stormwind and a lesser gain for the other members of the Alliance team. Typically, for Alliance or Horde teams, gaining reputation from quests for one faction yields 25% reputation spillover to the rest of the team. Most quests for main team factions above L10 grant spillover. Steamwheedle quests typically give 50% spillover, as the goblins are much more closely connected than the player teams. Reputation spillover continues through the middle of Exalted.

Reputation is gained by completing quests for the faction or (in some cases) by killing mobs which are in conflict with the faction. Reputation is usually lost by killing agents of the faction or (in some cases) by completing quests for an opposing faction. Humans gain a 10% bonus to accrued reputation due to their strength in Diplomacy. Reputation and PvP Honor are separate systems and do not affect each other.

When killing mobs, the reputation gain generally remains constant (previous to patch 3.0.8, the reputation gained from kills dropped off to 20% of the base gain for grey mobs). Normally, reputation gains for mob kills are capped at reaching Revered (the end of the Honored bracket); this varies from faction to faction. You must be on the mob's "hate list" at the time of its demise to gain reputation, either by dealing damage to it or by healing a combatant.

Since patch 2.0, reputation gains from quests do not drop off; even grey quests earn full reputation awards. This means that the best way to gain reputation with one of the team factions is to complete all quests (at least the ones after the starting zones) to take advantage of the spillover reputation effects. With the increased reputation rewards, it is possible to reach Exalted with most if not all the main racial factions by L40.

Note: The exception to this rule are the starting area quests for the draenei and blood elves added in the expansion. These quests still follow the original reputation aging pattern: 100% of reputation gains while the quest is within 5 levels, -20% per level thereafter, bottoming out at 10% of the base gain when the quest is 10 levels below the character. This was done to discourage other races saturating the new starting areas in hopes of earning an elephant or flamingo (okay - elekk or hawkstrider, to be strictly accurate) mount. It's hoped that this restriction will be lifted in a later patch.

While the default UI has adopted some of its functions, the venerable Reputation addon originally written by Egris and Karmond is still recommended because it displays spillover rep and has other useful features. Fizzwidget's Faction Friend adds tooltip information and tracking for faction turn-ins.

Championing

In the Wrath of the Lich King expansion, some of the factions can be Championed by wearing their tabards in L80 instances (Oculus, Utgarde Pinnacle, Halls of Lightning/Stone, and any Northrend heroic). These factions have their tabards available at Friendly. The factions which may be Championed are: Argent Crusade, Kirin Tor, Knights of the Ebon Hand, and the Wyrmrest Accord. If none of these factions are Championed, all reputation gains from kills will go to the default team faction - Alliance Vanguard or Horde Expedition.

The following is a list of factions which have active ways of gaining/losing reputation.

Mounts

The main benefit of becoming Exalted with the main team factions is to gain access to cross-faction mounts. The other factions tend to give a variety of different vendor items at various reputation levels. There is no additional benefit to having a cross-faction mount other than the (substantial) bragging rights.

The benefit of riding a mount varies; standard mounts require L30 and give 60% faster movement than base walking speed at a base cost of 45g (35g for Apprentice Riding skill, 10g for the mount itself), epic mounts (sometimes called "swiftmounts") require L60 and give 100% faster movement at a base cost of 700g (600g for Journeyman Riding skill, 100g for the mount). Reputation discounts apply, potentially reducing the cost to 20g or 560g. Normal flying mounts have a base cost of 900g (800g for skill, 100g for mount) and yield a +60% flying speed, while epic flying mounts have a base cost of 5200g (5000g for the skill, 200g for the mount) and give +280% flying speed. Note that flying mounts can only be used in Outland (or Northrend, after purchasing the Cold Weather Flying skill).

In order to ride a mount, you must acquire the Riding skill. Riding skill trainers are located in or near each capital city. You may only train with the trainer of your own faction or one with whom you have an Exalted reputation. There are currently two levels of riding skill for ground mounts:

  • Apprentice Riding (skill level 75) - base cost 35g, requires L30, allows riding standard (superior quality) mounts, including the racial L30 mounts, Paladin's Warhorse, Warlock's Felsteed, Spectral Tiger, the Winterspring Frostsaber, the colored Ahn'Qiraj bug mounts, the Brewfest Riding Ram, and the Magic Broom
  • Journeyman Riding (skill level 150) - base cost 600g, requires L60, allows riding epic (rare quality) mounts, including the racial L60 mounts, Talbuk stags, Paladin's Charger, Warlock's Dreadsteed, Swift Spectral Tiger, the Alterac Valley mounts, the Black War mounts, the Swift Brewfest Riding Ram and rare dropped mounts (Swift Magic Broom, Deathcharger, Swift Zulian Tiger, Swift Razzashi Raptor, the Black Qiraji bug mount, and the Raven Lord)

Flying mounts require higher levels of riding skill, learned from trainers at the Horde and Alliance bases in Shadowmoon Valley, Outland:

  • Expert Riding (skill level 225) - base cost 800g, requires L70, allows riding normal flying mounts (+60% flight speed), including the faction mounts (Horde Windriders and Alliance Gryphons), engineering Flying Machines, and Hallow's End Flying Brooms.
  • Artisan Riding (skill level 300) - base cost 5000g, requires L70, allows riding epic flying mounts (+280%/+310% flight speed), including engineering Turbo-Charged Flying Machines, the Hallow's End Swift Flying Broom, the Cenarion War Hippogryph, the Sha'tari Nether Ray, the Nether Drakes (both colored and swift), the phoenix (Al'ar), and the faction elite flying mounts.

To ride a flying mount in Northrend requires training in Cold Weather Flying from Hira Snowdawn at Krasus' Landing in Dalaran, Pilot Vic at River's Heart in Sholazar Basin, or Roxi Ramrocket at K3 in Storm Peaks. This requires L77, Journeyman Riding, and 1000g.

Paladins and Warlocks gain the appropriate level of Riding at no additional cost after completing their mount quests (Apprentice when gaining Summon Felsteed/Warhorse, Journeyman upon learning Summon Dreadsteed/Charger).

You need an Exalted reputation to earn the right to purchase a different faction's mount; you are always able to purchase the mount of your own faction. It is not possible for Alliance members to gain reputation with the Horde or vice versa. This means that you cannot get a cross-faction mount from the opposing team.

Note that all prices in this table are base prices and can be discounted with higher reputation with the faction.

You may save your Battleground Marks from PvP activity to purchase PvP reward mounts. Black War mounts (require 30 Marks from each Azerothian Battleground - Arathi Basin, Warsong Gulch, and Alterac Valley). are cool-looking swift-speed mounts and require L60 and Journeyman Riding skill. Note that someone with enough Marks can purchase and ride any of the Black War mounts of their team without gaining Exalted with the other factions (racial limitations still apply for tauren and mechanostriders). Halaa PvP participation will yield Halaa Battle and Research Tokens which can be used to purchase Dark Riding (70 Battle, 15 Research) or War (100 Battle, 20 Research) Talbuk mounts.

The Alterac Valley Battleground factions have swift-speed mounts as well for those who support their cause. Frostwolf Howlers (elite grey-white wolf mount) and Stormpike Battle Chargers (elite white ram mount) may be obtained from the faction Supply Officers in exchange for 50 Alterac Valley Marks of Honor. These mounts require L60 and Journeyman riding to ride.

The Arena ladder also rewards winning teams with access to the Swift Nether Drake, an armored version of the Nether Drake mounts that moves at 310% speed and requires Artisan riding.

There are also dropped mounts (generally swift speed, requiring L60 to ride and Journeyman Riding skill). Some examples are: the giant raven steed of the Raven Lord, Deathcharger (Baron Rivendare's skeletal warhorse) from Stratholme, the Fiery Warhorse of Attumen the Huntsman in Karazhan (min level 70), the Swift Razzashi Raptor and Swift Zulian Tiger from Zul'Gurub, and the Silithid Tanks (the tanks may only be used as mounts in AQ40 - The Temple of Ahn'Qiraj - as a result, they only require Apprentice Riding to master, except for the rare Black Qiraji mount which requires Journeyman). This is the only current way for Horde to get a tiger mount or Alliance to get a raptor or skeletal horse mount.

Patch 2.1 added a phoenix mount (summoned with the Ashes of Al'ar, a possible drop from Kael'thas Sunstrider). This is a swift flying mount and requires Artisan riding.

Patch 2.3 added the engineering-crafted Flying Machines (regular and Turbo-Charged) produced and used by experienced engineers.

Patch 3.0 added tailor-crafted flying carpets and the blue proto-drake mount dropped by King Ymiron in heroic Utgarde Pinnacle as well as mounts for the new NPC factions (Oracles, Wyrmrest).

Some of these mounts are only available during seasonal events. Examples are the Swift Riding Broom dropped by the Headless Horseman in the Scarlet Monastery Graveyard during Hallow's End and the Riding Rams which can be earned during Brewfest.

There is also a Turtle mount from the very rare variant of the Saltwater Snapjaw card for the World of Warcraft Trading Card Game. This mount has no speed bonus (it travels at normal run speed), but has no level or skill requirements (so even a L1 could use this). The Fires of Outland expansion added the opportunity to purchase a normal or swift speed Spectral Tiger mount from the Loot variant of the Spectral Tiger card. These are normal or swift-speed mounts with the same cost and requirements as normal racial mounts - but they're very cool-looking.

Some more mount information: There are trinkets, enchants, and items that improve mount speed. These include:

Carrot on a StickQuest: [50d] Gahr'zilla
Mithril Spurs235 Blacksmithing
Enchant Gloves - Riding Skill250 Enchanting
Riding Crop350 Leatherworking
The first three benefits (at least) all stack. The net effect has been hotly debated on the forums, but is at least a 9% speed increase over your mount's base movement. The riding crop is a trinket which yields a 10% mounted speed boost. Note that as of Patch 1.9, Paladins have a talent that increases their foot and mounted speed by up to 8%, however this talent does not stack with the effect of trinkets.

Professions and Reputation

Many high-end recipes are not available as drops - they may only be purchased from vendors of other factions. In most cases, it is necessary to gain reputation with the other factions in order to purchase these because they are Bind on Pickup and won't show up at the AH.
