Knights of the Ebon Blade

Shadow Vault

In the Battle for Light's Hope Chapel (as dramatized in the death knight quest "[55] The Light of Dawn"), Highlord Darion Mograine broke free from the control of the Lich King. He formed the Knights of the Ebon Blade - in homage to (or mockery of?) the Order of the Silver Hand - from his surviving death knights. The Knights took over Acherus, the necropolis that formerly served as Mograine's command base. From there, they provide training and guidance to to other renegade death knights, while assisting the Argent Crusade in their assault on Arthas' forces.

The Knights have Acherus as their primary base, with an outpost at Ebon Watch in Zul'drak. As part of the evolution of Icecrown, players will help retake the Shadow Vault in Icecrown for the Knights via the quest chain begun with "[80] It's All Fun and Games" started from the Icecrown airships. This unlocks access to Duchess Mynx, the Knights' quartermaster.

Reputation from Kills

The Knights of the Ebon Blade is one of the factions that may be Championed by wearing its tabard in L80 instances, earning reputation gains for all kills.

Quests

If you're not a death knight, the first main concentration of Ebon Blade quests can be found at Ebon Watch in Zul'drak, leading to the "Betrayal" quest that ends the Drakuru storyline. As part of the retaking of Icecrown, you will help Mograine and Fordring carve a foothold in Arthas' stronghold of Icecrown. The Ebon Blade representatives aboard the Icecrown airships will start the questline ("[80] It's All Fun and Games") that leads to the retaking of Shadow Vault.

Repeatable Reputation Quests for the Knights of the Ebon Blade

This faction has a good set of daily quests offered out of the Shadow Vault in Icecrown. These dailies are only available after you've helped take the Shadow Vault for the Ebon Blade and completed their related quests, in particular the rescue of Vaelen the Flayed and his men. Baron Silver then sends you to speak with Lord-Commander Arete at Death's Rise in a quest chain which unlocks the related dailies.

Quest Given By Description Reward
Leave Our MarkBaron Silver, Shadow VaultKill 15 vrykul around Jotunheim and plant Ebon Blade Banners near them250 rep, 7.40g, 22050 xp (13.23g)
Shoot 'Em UpThe Leaper, Shadow VaultShoot down 15 Jotunheim Proto-Drakes and their riders 250 rep, 7.40g, 22050 xp (13.23g)
The key to completing this quest effectively is to zoom in to first-person view. Lead your targets slightly, because the harpoons do have a flight time to target. If there aren't other players in the area, you can switch guns after each kill to start with full energy. Best results are usually with the guns in the middle.
Vile Like Fire!Vile, Shadow VaultSteal a Njorndar Proto-Drake and use it to set fire to 8 buildings250 rep, 7.40g, 22050 xp (13.23g)
Drakes may be found around (27. 38) at the northwest end of Njorndar Village. Fly to a nearby rooftop and flame the building. If you fly around the area near the Bone Witch's cave, you will be able to flame buildings as fast as your flame cools down. You can reflame the same building once its flames have died out.
No Fly ZoneUzo Deathcaller, Death's Rise, IcecrownKill 10 Onslaught Gryphon Riders250 rep, 7.40g, 22050 xp (13.23g)
Note that most high-level characters will have an easier time using ranged attacks from the platforms rather than using the Bone Gryphon. Use your own mount to fly to the platforms. If using the gryphon, it's especially important to avoid the paired patrols, since the gryphon is really only designed to handle a single foe.
Intelligence GatheringAurochs Grimbane, Death's Rise, IcecrownCollect 5 Onslaught Intel Documents in Onslaught Harbor250 rep, 7.40g, 22050 xp (13.23g)
You will need to kill Onslaught mobs to get their keys (typically will end up needing 10-15 keys). The trunks are found around the harbor, with a concentration near the ships. One of the best ways is to camp one of the ships. Complete this quest with "From Their Corpses, Rise!"
From Their Corpses, Rise!Setaal Darkmender, Onslaught Harbor, IcecrownKill 10 Scarlet Onslaught mobs and apply Darkmender's Tincture to them250 rep, 7.40g, 22050 xp (13.23g)

You may also trade an Emblem of Triumph for a Commendation Badge that yields 520 rep.

Practical Notes

Other than the Death Knights, this is more of a late-game faction, since the quartermaster can't be accessed until you take Shadow Vault in Icecrown, which requires L77 and a flying mount. The gear available at Revered and Exalted is on par with heroic instance rewards (item level 200). The Arcanum of Torment is also notable for melee classes.

It's worthwhile to go through the effort to unlock the daily quests, both for the additional base of operations and the additional daily income. Icecrown's concentration of daily quests makes it a premiere income-generating area for L80s. With that in mind, it's probably not necessary to ever Champion this faction, since you'll earn the rep just by doing dailies for income.

In general, the Ebon Blade questlines are very well done and worth doing for the play value. The Zul'drak questline leads to "Betrayal," which is required for the "Guru of Drakuru" achievement. Also, achieving Exalted with the Ebon Blade is required for the "Knights of the Ebon Blade" and "Northrend Vanguard" achievements.
