Dalaran Children’s Week (29 April – 5 May)

Orphan Matron Aria The Lich King’s cruel reign has inflicted great suffering on all of Northrend’s inhabitants, particularly the children. If you are a friend to the Oracles or Frenzyheart Tribe of Sholazar, perhaps you might consider caring for an orphan for a week… You may choose to care for an Oracle orphan or a Frenzyheart orphan, but you will not be able to help both.

Even in forbidding Northrend, the Orphan Matrons have found pups to nurture. Noble-minded characters have the option to select an oracle or wolvar orphan to show around the continent (seasonal event page may be found here). The main Children’s Week questline involves taking a young orphan to see the sights of Northrend. If you already have the appropriate flight paths, you can complete the entire series under an hour. To start, visit Aria at the planter near the fountain in the Eventide quarter of Dalaran (southern part of the city, near 49.4, 63.1). You will then choose which pup you adopt – the choice of pup will lead you on slightly different quest paths and ultimately decide which companion pet you earn. Your reputation standing with the Sholazar tribes does not affect which orphan you can escort; the pups do not inherit the feelings of their tribes (for good or ill).

Please note that while mobs will not target your orphan directly, she can still be affected by AoE, so it’s safer to dismiss it while running between destinations and whistle it back up when you get there. Also, the orphan whistle now has a time duration of 7 (real time) days. Unlike the Outland and Azerothian Children’s Weeks, you can’t ask for another whistle once you turn it in, so enjoy your orphan while you can.

The initial quest requires you to ask Aria about the orphans. This reiterates the fact that you can only pick on orphan per season. After accepting this, you summon and speak to your orphan and receive three tourist quests. Both of them tour the Bronze Dragonshrine, where encounters with their future selves show that both have great destinies, doubtless because of the good example of heroes like yourself. After completing these quests, the next two quests are to visit Alexstrasza the Life-Binder and a location involving Sholazar Basin. Finally, you return to Dalaran to play catch with a paper zeppelin and return your orphan to the matron’s care. Shortly afterwards, a letter from your orphan arrives in the mail with a curious little Sholazar critter to add to your companion collection.

Note: Most of these quests have a scripted event. If there’s a lot of orphans in the area, it can be hard to get the event to trigger for you; only one orphan can be “active” at a time. The easiest way around this is to dismiss and resummon the orphan to reset the event. Also, you should ensure that you have the orphan summoned before you enter the target area to have a better chance of triggering the event. Another approach is to run the quests at off hours or late in the event week when fewer orphans will be around. Also note that all XP awards listed are approximate and scale up with level.

With the 2012 event, long-standing orphan tenders will have a choice of 25 Magical Pet Biscuits or a 5g Curmudgeon’s Payoff if they already have the pet.

Unlike the Azerothian or Outland celebrations, taking care of the Sholazar orphans yields no reputation gains, not even with those factions. However, you do get some easy xp or gold and a new companion pet, so time spent with these (relatively uncute) orphans is probably well spent.

Kekek the Wolvar Orphan

We miss you a lot. Everybody likes our story about meeting the Great One and now they all want to meet a Great One too. They don’t believe some of our stories. They think we made up dragon queen and dragonshrine stories. They just jealous.

Life at orphanage is better these days. Matron takes us out to play in the park and sometimes we even get new toys, but we still lonely. We want to come visit with you. Maybe you take us some more places? You like that?

Your friend,
Roo

Kekek not good at writing, but learn how just to write you letter. Orphan-lady found old copy of Green Hills book Hemet talked about. Been reading it, learning how to be great hunter like you and Hemet Nesingwary. Takes a lot of words to be good hunter, Kekek guess.

Kekek want to try out stuff he read about in Green Hills book. Maybe you let Kekek come visit and we can hunt together? Kekek promise not to kill steal.

Your friend,
Kekek
