Outland Children’s Week (29 April – 5 May)

Orphan Matron Mercy

The conflicts in Outland are deadlier than any I have seen. And their most tragic victims are the children that are left behind. Now, with the threat against Shattrath from the arakkoa of Skettis, there will be even more orphans to take care of. These children often live without the hope of a bright future. But you have the power to do something about that. It’s Children’s Week, and I implore you to volunteer to bring joy and wonder into a child’s life.

– Orphan Matron Mercy, Shattrath City

For the Children!

As with the quests in Azeroth, Alliance and Horde characters have different (though similar) quests for this season (event page may be found here). The main Children’s Week questline involves taking a young orphan to see the sights of the expansion, both in Outland and some of the new zones in Azeroth. If you already have the appropriate griff routes, you can complete the entire series under an hour (shorter if you’re a mage with ‘ports, of course). To start, visit the orphanage found in the outer wall of the Lower City of Shattrath, just north of the eastern bridge into Shattrath. This is temporarily set up in the refugee hostel run by Nicole Bartlett (near 74.8, 48.0). Speak to Orphan Matron Mercy, and she will issue you an orphan whistle and the first quest. You must be at least L60 to undertake these quests.

Please note that while mobs will not target your orphan directly, she can still be affected by AoE, so it’s safer to dismiss her while running between destinations and whistle her back up when you get there. Also, the orphan whistle now has a time duration of 7 (real time) days (prior to Patch 2.4, this was /played days, so you could keep your orphan around longer).

After the initial quest, which just requires you to summon and speak to the orphan, the orphan will give you three tourist quests. After completing all three quests, the orphan will add the quest to visit the Exodar (if you’re Alliance) and the Caverns of Time. Finally, the orphan gives you the quest to turn in the whistle and claim your reward. There are some interesting foreshadowing comments made by Zaladormu in the Caverns of Time that may mean the orphan girls have a part to play in the future.

Note: Most of these quests have a scripted event (such as the encounter with Zaladormu or the soldier at the Dark Portal). These are quite fun and show a lot of effort. However, if there’s a lot of orphans in the area, it can be hard to get the event to trigger for you; only one orphan can be “active” at a time. The easiest way around this is to dismiss and resummon the orphan to reset the event. Also, you should ensure that you have the orphan summoned before you enter the target area to have a better chance of triggering the event. Another approach is to run the quests at off hours or late in the event week when fewer orphans will be around. Also note that all XP awards listed are approximate and scale up with level.

For about an hour’s work, you get a sizable chunk of Lower City reputation, some easy xp (or gold, for max levels – 22050 xp maps to 13.23g per quest), a new vanity pet, and the good feeling of having helped to start a young orphan on the road to destiny.

[-1] Children’s Week
Obtainable at L60
Orphan Matron Mercy Use the Draenei Orphan Whistle to call for the ward that you will be looking after during Children’s Week. Draenei Orphan Whistle, 10 Lower City rep
[-1] Auchindoun and the Ring of Observance Dornaa Take your orphan, Dornaa, to the Meeting Stone at the Ring of Observance in the middle of Auchindoun. 27570 xp (16.54 g), 250 Lower City rep
Coming in across the Bone Wastes from the north, find one of the entrances down into the Ring of Observance. There’s one S-SW of the Refugee Camp; look for the braziers with blue flames. There are L63-65 mobs in the area, but they can be ridden past without much problem (an elite mount helps a lot here!). Go down to ground level of the ring; the Meeting Stone is close the to middle of the area.
[-1] Jheel is at Aeris Landing! Dornaa Take your orphan, Dornaa, to Aeris Landing in Nagrand. Make sure to call for her if she is not present when you arrive. Then, speak with Jheel. 27570 xp (16.54 g), 250 Lower City rep
If you ride in from Zangarmarsh, the road to Aeris Landing is lightly patrolled; just watch out for the occasional L67 Murkbloods and you should be fine. Follow the signs towards Halaa; if Halaa is friendly to your faction, ride through Halaa and out the south side, following the road west (right) to Aeris Landing. If Halaa is unfriendly, just skirt the southern edge of the surrounding lake. Make sure that Dornaa is summoned before you enter Aeris Landing; in some cases, the quest wouldn’t complete if Dornaa was summoned while standing next to Jheel.
[-1] A Trip to the Dark Portal Dornaa Take your orphan, Dornaa, up the steps of the Stair of Destiny to stand before the Dark Portal in Hellfire Peninsula. 27570 xp (16.54 g) xp, 250 Lower City rep
“We should most definitely go someplace on the other side of the Dark Portal!”
[-1] The Seat of the Naaru Dornaa Take your orphan, Dornaa, to stand before O’ros at the bottom of the Seat of the Naaru inside of the Exodar, which is on Azuremyst Isle. 13785 xp (8.27g), 75 Lower City rep, Blessing of O’ros (60 min buff)
There’s a circular path that leads downward from the Seat of the Naaru (the central area of the Exodar). At the bottom is an area where you can actually approach O’ros.
[-1] Call on the Farseer O’ros Take your orphan, Dornaa, to visit Farseer Nobundo at the Crystal Hall inside of the Exodar. 13785 xp (8.27g), 75 Lower City rep
Farseer Nobundo is located up the ramp at the back of the Crystal Hall (remember to use the World Map for city navigation if you don’t know your way around Exodar yet). Dornaa demonstrates the ability to summon elemental forces and reveals that she’s been communicating with Nobundo in dreams. He offers to provide her a home and training for her abilities.
[-1] Time to Visit the Caverns Dornaa Take your orphan, Dornaa, to stand before Zaladormu, the dragon on the dais in the middle of the Caverns of Time. Then, purchase a Toy Dragon for her from the Keepers of Time Quartermaster, Alurmi, near the bottom of the entrance tunnel. 27570 xp (16.54 g), 250 Lower City rep
The Toy Dragon will cost you a gold (base price) – well spent for the smile it brings to Dornaa’s face. A couple of dragonkin Wardens of Time seem ready to seize her, but are stopped by Zaladormu:
“Wait! This girl has done nothing, and will not be held accountable for what she might do, or fail to do, in the future. Go in peace, child.”
Between Nobundo and Zaladormu, it seems this child has a destiny.
[-1] Back to the Orphanage Dornaa Return your ward to the Shattrath City orphanage by handing in the Draenei Orphan Whistle to Orphan Matron Mercy in the Lower City. Your choice of:

  • Elekk Training Collar (Peanut the baby elekk pet)
  • Egbert’s Egg (Egbert the hawkstrider hatchling pet)
  • Sleepy Willy (Willy the Floating Eye pet)
  • Legs (Legs the Marshstrider pet)
  • 25xMagical Pet Biscuits

If you already have the Garadar flight point, fly in there and go clockwise around (or swim north across) the lake to reach the Throne. Otherwise, ride south from Zangarmarsh and follow the signs to Garadar (southeast from where the road enters Nagrand). Head east as you come out of the mountains and look for the circle of standing stones. There’s usually a herd of storm ragers in the area, but they can be avoided.

Children Say the Darn’dest Things

Dornaa the Draenei Orphan Why isn’t the Outland called Draenor anymore?
If a horse gets horseshoes, will I get draenei shoes?
If I hold my breath, what color would I turn?
If the Burning Legion is such a problem, why not just throw water on them? Then they’ll just be a Legion.
Is the Twisting Nether shaped like a pretzel? And just what is a Nether? The orphan matron said I shouldn’t ask people about their nethers.
Does a naaru turn off the Light when it wants to sleep?
How do you drink and eat so much, and not get fat?
Are we there yet?
I think I need a bath. *sniff* I think you need one too!
I bet ice cream would taste better if it were socketed!
Would a tauren paladin be a holy cow?
If the demons fell, where did they fall from?
I bet Illidan is a nice guy underneath. He just needs a mama, too.
Boys have cooties and girls have beauty!
Does this dress make me look fat?
Are we there yet?
Blood Elf Orphan

Thank you for the time that we spent together during Children’s Week. Did you know that Farseer Nobundo has asked the orphan matron to allow me to study with him at the Exodar?

Thank you for taking me to all of those neat places and to visit my brother, Jheel. I miss him almost as much as I miss you. And, the Ring of Observance, the Dark Portal, and the Caverns of Time were neato!

I’m sure that you’re taking good care of my pet. Tell him that I miss him, too!

Love, Dornaa

Thank you for taking me out during Children’s Week. Lady Liadrin, the leader of the Blood Knights, has asked that I be released to her custody for training in Silvermoon City!

I just wanted to thank you for taking me to see my friend, Hch’uu, as well as the Dark Portal, the Throne of the Elements, and the Caverns of Time. I like my toy dragon very much!

I’m sure that you’re taking good care of my pet. Please tell him that I miss him!

Sincerely, Salandria
