Love is in the Air (6-19 February)

Kwee Q. PeddlefeetAdjacent to the Lunar Festival season comes an outbreak of romance and admiration in the capital cities. This is marked by the exchanging of tokens of affection and small gifts. There is also an investigation to find the source of all this romance.

In every capital city, the Crown Chemical Co. has set up small shops. You can find these flowered archways near the auction house or bank of major cities (except for Undercity, where they have set up in the old Lordaeron throne room above the city). Each romantic archway has a Public Relations Agent, a Lovely Merchant, and the mascot Kwee Q. Peddlefeet, the goblin equivalent of cupid (Q. Ped). The Public Relations Officer offers a daily quest (the same quest is given out by officers in all cities, so you can’t do it multiple times by visiting other capitals). Kwee provides the Lovely Charm Collector’s Kit, which allows you to gather Lovely Charms. Charms are produced randomly from non-gray mobs or players (production rate appears to be around 25%); only the player who gets the killing blow has a chance to receive the Charm. You combine 10 charms to make a Lovely Charm Bracelet. Note that the Charms are soulbound, but the Bracelets are not. Making these are required for the “Charming” achievement. In addition, you may turn in a bracelet to the city leaders of each capital city once per day. The dailies grant Love Tokens, which are used as the currency for seasonal items.

As in previous years, blowing a /kiss to Kwee Q. Peddlefeet grants the Smitten buff, increasing health by 200 for an hour.

Crown Chemical Co. Locations

Near the bank in the Trade District, Stormwind Next to the auction house in the Vale of Strength, Orgrimmar
Next to the bank in Ironforge In the old Lordaeron throne room above Undercity
Southeast of the bank in Darnassus Near the base of the central spiral ramp in Thunder Bluff
Outside the main entrance to The Exodar Near the bank in the Bazaar, Silvermoon City

Adorable Items

The Crown Chemical Co. stands each have a Lovely Merchant who will sell a variety of seasonal items. Most of the consumable items (e.g., perfumes, colognes, petals) have a 10 day duration, although it isn’t always reflected in the tooltip.

Apothecary Hummel in Shadowfang Keep drops item level 346 epic neck pieces and some nice seasonal items:

  • Choker of the Pure Heart (Neck, Str: 168, Sta: 252, MinLvl: 80, Equip: +116 hit rating, +107 critical strike rating)
  • Heartbreak Charm (Neck, Sta: 252, Int: 168, MinLvl: 80, Equip: +114 haste rating, +109 critical strike rating)
  • Shard of Pirouetting Happiness (Neck, Str: 168, Sta: 252, MinLvl: 80, Equip: +128 dodge rating, +85 hit rating)
  • Sweet Perfume Broach (Neck, Agi: 168, Sta: 252, MinLvl: 80, Equip: +101 critical strike rating, +119 haste rating)
  • Winking Eye of Love (Neck, Sta: 252, Int: 168, Spi: 109, MinLvl: 80, Equip: +114 critical strike rating)

The first time you defeat Hummel each day via the Dungeon Queue, you will also receive a Heart-Shaped Box which contains 24 Justice Points and the chance for one or more for:

  • Big Love Rocket (mount – speed scales with riding skill)
  • Forever-Lovely Rose (Head, Equip: displays a red rose in your hair (female) or teeth (male) – same effect as receiving the Lovely Rose buff)
  • The Heartbreaker (Use: makes target cry briefly)
  • Toxic Wasteling (non-combat pet)
  • Vile Fumigator’s Mask (Cloth Head, AC: 236, MinLvl: 75, Use: Sprays an enemy with vile fumes, incapacitating it for 30 sec. Any damage caused will revive the target.)

Note that you may receive a message indicating that there is nothing to loot when you click on the box. This just means that the box held only your 24 Justice Points and no other item at all. Better luck next time!

Also, there are bouquets of roses that drop off instance bosses during this season (regular or heroic). These are permanent items that have the same visual effect as the Handful of Rose Petals.

  • Bouquet of Red Roses (Off-hand Use: Showers a nearby target with a cascade of rose petals!)
    • Prince Keleseth – Utgarde Keep
    • Prince Taldaram – Ahn’kahet: The Old Kingdom
    • Maiden of Grief – Halls of Stone

Investigating the Love Bug

Not content to chalk it up to spring, there are those who insist on looking into the outbreak of affection. Steamwheedle Cartel’s Inspector Snip Snagglebolt, Stormwind, and Detective Snap Snagglebolt, Orgrimmar, have separately come to conclusion that the Crown Chemical Co. is up to no good. In fact, you find that this operation is a front for the Venture Co., and the Cartel will reward you to shut them down. Horde and Alliance have parallel questlines. Overall, the quest rewards are light compared to other recent seasonal content but it’s a quick diversion. The quests are obtainable at any level. Also note that the daily quests give more xp for higher level characters; the values shown are for L80.

Note that this is just a “pointer quest” and is not necessary to start the quest line. Snagglebolt stands just uphill from the bank (51.0, 65.9)

Daily Quests
[-1] A Cloudlet of Classy Cologne
[-1] A Perfect Puff of Perfume
[-1] Bonbon Blitz
Public Relations Agent, capital cities Test samples of the products on 10 players. 5 Love Tokens, 22050 xp (13.23g)
You can perform one product demo quest per day. All you need to do is target a player character and click on the provided sample item to toss or spray a sample. This also gives the player the Sample Satisfaction buff which places a heart mark above his/her head for 10 minutes. You do not get credit for providing samples to someone already satisfied. These quests can only be performed in the capital cities, so there’ll be some competition to find unsatisified players – try the auction houses to pick up bank toons.
[-1] A Gift for the [Local Ruler] Kwee Q. Peddlefeet, capital cities Present a Lovely Charm Bracelet to [Local Ruler] 5 Love Tokens, Lovely [City] Card
To make Charm Bracelets, you need to ask Kwee for the (free!) Lovely Charm Collector’s Kit. Thereafter, keep this in your inventory and you’ll begin getting Lovely Charms appearing in your inventory after “worthy” mob kills (seems to be around 25% of non-gray mobs/players). Combine 10 Charms to make a Lovely Charm Bracelet. You may gift each of the 4 city rulers of your faction once per day. Each city card has a different 1 hour stat buff which scales up with level (+30 at L80); unfortunately, you can only have one card buff active at any time.

  • Lovely Darnassus/Orgrimmar Card (+Agility)
  • Lovely Stormwind/Undercity Card (+Intellect)
  • Lovely Ironforge/Thunder Bluff Card (+Stamina)
  • Lovely Exodar/Silvermoon Card (+Spirit)
[-1] Crushing the Crown Inspector/Detective Snagglebolt Kill five (level appropriate) mobs and use Snagglebolt’s Khorium Bomb to destroy a Crown Chemical Wagon. 5 Love Tokens, 22050 xp (13.23g)
The type of mob varies with level, but the chemical wagons are the same everywhere, so you can actually get credit for destroying a lower-level chemical wagon if you’re having trouble with the rather quick respawn rate of Crown guards.

  • L5: Crown Lackey (L8-9, ~200 health) northwest end of Mirror Lake Orchard, Elwynn Forest (29.2, 65.7) or west of Orgrimmar’s gates (40.2, 15.3)

Apothecaries Hummel, Baxter, and Frye

Apothecary Hummel and Friends

After completing the initial quest chain, you will have the option to queue for the Hummel encounter by talking with the Inspector/Detective. You must be L84 to queue for the encounter. You may also manually make your way overland to Shadowfang Keep. The Keep has been taken over by the Crown Chemical Co who have set up shop in the courtyard. The three apothecaries are all L87 elites.

  • Hummel – sprays perfume in an AoE cone in front of him and has a damaging perfume aura
  • Baxter – sprays cologne in an AoE cone in front of him and has a damaging cologne aura
  • Frye – throws vials of perfume (purple) or cologne (green) which form damaging puddles on the ground

Using the protection potions found on a table at one side of the courtyard, you can be immune to either cologne or perfume. One suggested method is for the tank to be immune to perfume and attack Hummel, while an off-tank or armored melee DPS immune to cologne takes Baxter. Keep the mobs separated and faced away from the rest of the party. If you’ve got those two handled, you have options for kill order. A typical order is Hummel, Baxter, then Frye. Some groups who really can’t stand the chaos will take Frye first. The rest of the party should choose to be immune to either perfume or cologne; melee DPS need to be immune to the aura of their target. If you are immune to perfume, you can stand in the purple pools left by Frye. If you are immune to cologne, you can stand in the green ones. Otherwise, the pools do 2k+ damage per tick, so avoid them if you can. Frye can be stunlocked to limit his random destruction. The apothecaries will also periodically cast Chain of Chaos, an AoE damage spell. Hummel drops a variety of item level 346 items, a seasonal pet, and a rare “Big Love Rocket” flying mount.

Note that the first time you kill Apothecary Hummel, he will drop a Faded Lovely Greeting Card, which starts the quest “Something is in the Air (and It Ain’t Love),” which has you return the card to Detective/Inspector Snagglebolt for a small sum of money.

The apothecaries (including snippets of their dialog) reference The Rock, a 1996 film starring Sean Connery and Nicholas Cage. The plot involves the potential poisoning of San Francisco using rockets launched from Alcatraz.

Practical Notes

You can generate 30 tokens a day with dailies assuming you make bracelets for all four city leaders. You can also use additional Charm Bracelets to purchase additional tokens – however, note that you get 5 tokens for the daily turn in and only 1 token for a purchase, so unless you have lots of spare bracelets, you will be better off using the bracelets for dailies. To complete all the achievements, you will need 109 tokens if you’re just starting out. You will need more if you’re unlucky with your Box of Chocolates, Bag of Candy, or Lovely Dress Box (but note that the Lovely Dress achievement is not needed for the meta). Use your leftover tokens for the buff perfume/colognes.

Since the charms are created merely by kills, one of the best places for high-level players to farm charms is the entrance to Ulduar, since (at this time) you get credit from the mobs killed while you’re in a vehicle.

Note that any achievement requiring the use of a Handful of Rose Petals can also be achieved with the use of the Bouquet of Red Roses. At this time, it does not appear that the effect of the Bouquet of Ebon Roses counts, however, so you’ll have to try to earn your petals by the Handful. You will get credit if you already have the Peddlefeet vanity pet, but you will need to find a new Black Dress to get the “Lovely Luck” achievement.

Special thanks go out to our Horde brethren of Too Horde to Handle on Lightbringer.
